Dear Parents and Guardians
On behalf of the school community I would like to extend a special welcome to our Kindergarten children and to students who are commencing at Holy Rosary Catholic School for the very first time. We also welcome to our Holy Rosary Catholic School community Clara, Edie, Nina, Hunter, Valencia, Isabella, Mabel, Xavier and Marshall.
We welcome back Mrs Catherine Perkins from Parental Leave. We also welcome to our Holy Rosary Catholic School community Emily Berry (Administration), Belinda McCreghan (Teaching Assistant), Olivia French (Teaching Assistant), Georgia Hay (Trainee), James Bourke (Trainee), April Bradford, Cody Peterson, Montana Hills and Veronika Rabosea our Catholic Care Ludo educators. I would like to thank all staff for the dedication and commitment during January to ensure our school environment is ready for our students.
2021 is indeed a very unique year in the history of Holy Rosary Catholic School. It is our 60th Anniversary. It is the very first year we welcome three years olds into our community with our partnership with Catholic Care. It is also the year that we will have the majority of our buildings completed and after the devastation of January 2020 we are all feeling very relieved to be returning to a school that continues to grow and provide an outstanding environment for all our students.
Once again I look forward to working with you and your child/children in 2021 and please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email at bernie.brooks@catholic.tas.edu.au

Prayer for the Start of the School Year
God of wisdom and might,
we praise you for the wonder of our being,
for mind, body and spirit.
Be with our children as they begin
a new school year.
Bless them and our staff and our community.
Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow;
wisdom and knowledge to their minds
as they search for understanding;
and peace and zeal to their hearts.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
On Monday 14th December all children will have an opportunity to spend some time in their new classroom and meet their new teachers and classmates. On this day the students will bring home class lists and booklists. Reports will go live to parents through the Compass portal at 10.30am on Monday 14th December. There will be an opportunity for parents who wish to request an interview to speak to the class teacher of 2020 on Tuesday 17th December.
Kindergarten to Grade 2 Athletics Carnival
As the sun began to rise over the mighty Derwent, the HPE dept, the maintenance team, and the energetic Sports Leaders descended onto Abbotsfield Park; one of the iconic sports fields in Tasmania.
A couple of hours later with the ground set up and ready the mighty Grade 1s began appearing over the rise, entering the arena thanks to the local 'eastern entrance'. From that point in time Abbotsfield Park was the scene of athletic performance rarely witnessed in one place. With House Colours filling the lanes and bopping between novelty events, fun and excitement ruled the morning.
Next up were the grade 2s in their final 'junior' carnival before heading into the big time. Familiar names sped along the track; Wise, Burdon, Beamish and Grace toiling and jostling for the coveted first place gong.
Following the grade 2s were the vibrant and uber excited Kinders! They arrived in a sea of red, blue and yellow, ready for their first ever carnival at HRCS. They competed with great vigour and enthusiasm, the vortexes sliced through the air, the familiar squealing sound bringing delight to the spectators who had amassed around the fence nearby.
As the Kinders exited the arena the staff and Sports Leaders enjoyed 45 seconds of relative silence before our final guests arrived in the form of our Prep crew. Fresh off a move to the demountables they were ready to tear up the track and jump like jumping Jai Tarema in the 2000 Olympic long jump!
All in all a great day was had by all and hopefully next year we'll return to this Field of Dreams with the Wuhan lurgy firmly stuck in 2020. I would like to personally thank the effervescent Mrs Ludwig whose distribution of ribbons and packing up skills were world class, Mr Jones who has nearly mastered the art of starting and the outrageously talented Mr Luttrell whose rake work on the long jump was 'elite'.
A number of events are occurring over the last two weeks, please continue to monitor Compass for any events shared.
Please note the information in relation to the Grade 6 events have been shared on Compass previously.
Grade 6 Celebration Dinner - Thursday 10th December
On Thursday, December 10th, we are hosting the Grade 6 Celebration Dinner in St Bernard’s Hall. This event will begin at 6:00pm and conclude at 7:45pm. Students are to wear neat casual dress. We remind parents and students that this is a Grade 6 event and that excess makeup, nail colours and transport by special cars are not necessary and ask that this request is respected. Parents are welcome to take photos from 5:45pm till 6:00pm outside the school hall.
At 6:00pm we will open the doors and invite students inside to take part in their dinner. This will consist of a sit-down meal and then some music and dancing opportunities as per COVID-19 safety plan.
Grade 6 Liturgy and Award Celebration - Wednesday 16th December
On Wednesday, 16th December, the Grade Six Liturgy and Award Celebration will be held in St Bernard’s Hall. It will commence at 6:00pm and conclude by 7:30pm. This will be the final formal school event for Grade 6 students. Our School Hall has limited capacity for adult seating as we are required to meet the following restriction of:
In-door gatherings involving large numbers of parents/visitors in excess of 250 persons, or more than one person per 2m2 per indoor space whichever is the lesser.
In keeping in line with this mandate we can only accommodate a certain number of adults in the Hall.
For this reason the following will be in place
- Two adults per each Grade 6 student. Booking to be made through QKR. An overview of how to do this is described below. The booking system opened on Monday 30th November and closes on Wednesday 9th December
- No younger siblings are to attend the event.
- No students from other grade levels will be attending
- Politicians have already sent apologies as they recognise the challenges for all schools and the need to ensure seating is for parents.
- Limited staff attendance
- Students to be seated on the stage.
- The event will be videoed and shared.
End of Year Assembly Kinder to Grade 5 - Thursday 16th December @ 11:30am
We are incredibly disappointed that our end of year assembly will be for students only. This is always such a celebration and wonderful assembly but in order for the children to celebrate we are unable to have parents attend due to the limited space and restrictions we continue to follow. A zoom link will be sent to all parents and we are hoping that many parents will take the opportunity to join us in this way. The assembly will conclude at 1.00pm and parents are welcome to pick up children from classrooms from 1.00pm.
Our Prep to Grade 2 students commenced their Learn to Swim Program from Monday 30th November to Friday 11th December. All information has been sent home through Compass. Details can be found under Events in Compass in the Resources Tab.
We continue to see many changes and progress around our school site. I would particularly like to thank our parents for their understanding and patience with the incredible amount of construction and our very resilient students who have adapted to the changes so readily.
Stage 2A: The second bank of toilets are complete and in use. The area surrounding the entrance to the new Canteen, Student Hub & Library and Undercover Area is in progress. Unfortunately due to the building works that will continue for Learning Support and mapali we have made the decision that the Canteen will not be able to commence operation until Term 1 2021.
Stage 2B: The extension from the new Student Hub & Library for our Learning Support rooms, sensory space, mapali and additional offices for Allied Health professionals with a new entrance linking these areas together, are progressing well and on track for use early in Term 1.
Stage 3: The redevelopment of the Early Years Centre to become the Early Learning Centre. Holy Rosary Catholic School is one of a limited number of schools that will be involved in a pilot project of operating an early learning centre, which will see the inclusion of three years olds into our school community through the LUDO program being offered by Catholic Care. Our ELC will be home to LUDO and our two Kindergarten classes. Additional landscaping in this area will also be completed.
Stage 3A: Designs are progressing for the new Prep learning areas and a landscaped play space between the ELC and Prep.
