- UPDATE: Parent Seminar - How to Raise a Tough Teen
Dear Families
It seems hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our second term and have a two week break to recharge our energies ready for the third term. It certainly has been a very busy and productive term and we have so many reasons to celebrate our achievements during this time. In addition to these achievements we continue to focus on the core business of teaching and learning and providing our students with the very best educational opportunities.
All members of our community have now been informed of my decision to retire from Principalship of Holy Rosary Catholic School at the end of 2021. This incredible school and community has been such a huge part of my life for 9 years. Parents, staff and students have had the opportunity to consult or complete surveys in relation to the characteristics they believe are required for the next ten years. The position of Principal will be advertised in the coming weeks and the community will be informed by Catholic Education Tasmania when a decision has been reached and an appointment made. I will be on leave during Term 3 but will return for Term 4 and look forward to spending time in Term 4 with our community.
We thank everyone for their ongoing support of Holy Rosary Catholic School and look forward to third term which will commence on Monday 19th July.
Bernadette Brooks
Principal
Together we pray
- Jesus, you and your family knew what it was like to live in a country where it was not safe. May those who are unsafe in their own country find a new safe place.
- Jesus, you and your family knew how scary and sad it was to leave your home and country. May the refugees today be comforted and safe.
- Jesus, you and your family returned home when it was safe. May countries become more safe so refugees can go home if they wish to.
- Jesus, you welcomed the stranger. Help us to welcome all those refugees who seek a safe home in Australia.
- Jesus, you gave us the example of caring for everyone. May we follow you and have love and compassion for refugees.
Based on See the Real Me Not Just the Refugee from the Simply Sharing program.
As advised previously I will be on leave from Monday 19th July to Friday 24th September and Mrs Lauren McCallum has been appointed by Catholic Education Tasmania to the role of Acting Principal of Holy Rosary Catholic School.
While Mrs Lauren McCallum is Acting Principal, Mrs Gemma Bennett and Mrs Sarah Dance have been appointed as Acting Co-Deputy Principals. Gemma and Sarah have extensive experience and will be excellent in this shared role. I would like to congratulate both Gemma and Sarah on their appointments.
As a consequence of Gemma and Sarah taking on additional leadership responsibilities, there will be some internal changes within the school that have been communicated to the families of the classes impacted.
I sincerely thank Lauren, Gemma and Sarah for taking on these additional leadership roles. I feel extremely fortunate to know that our school will be in such caring and capable hands and know they will have the full support of all in our community.

UPDATE: Parent Seminar - How to Raise a Tough Teen
Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 situation on the mainland, presenter Glen Gerreyn is unable to fly into Tasmania.
For this reason we have postponed to Tuesday 14 September at the same time and place. Registrations will carry across to the new date.
I have attached an updated poster FYI.
If the COVID-19 situation does not allow Glen to fly in for 14 September, he will present to our Theatre via Zoom and we will have an MC facilitate parent questions etc.
Thank you for your understanding and apologies for inconvenience caused.
Over the past 20 years Glen has shared his message of hope with over a million people around the world; engaging with students, parents, teachers, employees, sporting groups and community leaders. Glen has been invited to speak at TEDx events and on national TV and radio. He has authored five books and created the ‘Men of Honor X’ character development course.
Glen has a unique ability to capture the attention of thousands, while deeply affecting individuals. So much more than being able to inspire, is the absolute art of being able to compel people to take action in their lives. Therein lies Glen’s undeniable gift. With a unique ability of encoding today’s data into tomorrow’s dialect, Glen continues to offer audiences profound experiences of meaning and identity; shifting perceptions, challenging boundaries, and motivating positive change.
We know that young people are living and inheriting an increasingly complex world – socially, environmentally and politically. It’s a world that causes many to flounder- drifting away from their identity, forgetting their purpose and being blinded by societal pressures and fears. Right now, it is also a world where things feel incredibly uncertain. For young people this can lead to a struggle to stay positive and hopeful.
We would like to offer you, their parents, and parents in the wider Hobart community, the opportunity, free of charge, to hear Glen’s Positive Parenting/How to Raise a Tough Teen Seminar. This seminar is now on Tuesday 14 September, at 6.00pm in the Don Bosco Theatre at our Glenorchy campus. GYC has secured a grant through the Tasmanian Catholic Schools Parents Council to support this seminar and to help us further engage with our parent community. Glen shares the five fundamental positive parenting tools, based on positive psychology research. Our hope is that you will leave feeling equipped to better connect with your children and to empower them to tackle the complex world. Topic covered include:
- How to help your child find a vision
- The rules of encouragement
- How to be where you are
- Teaching your children how to fail
- How to say you’re sorry
- Making the home a refuge
To secure your free seats to attend on Tuesday 14 September, please visit Tickets. You are invited to share this invitation with any parent who may be interested to attend.
