News from HPE Department

HRCS Athletics Carnival

With the shadow of COVID -19 and Donald Trump’s golden glow still enveloping the globe, the Holy Rosary PE Dept began preparing for the 2020 Grade 3-6 HRCS Athletics Carnival. After the loss of Miss Wise due to a goal square mishap the pressure was firmly on Mr Johnson to come up with something to appease the masses. A revised event schedule and extensive COVID-19 measures meant the jewel in the crown of sports carnivals was  given the green light for 2020! This year’s version saw grades trudging under the Brooker to compete on the ‘Field of Dreams’ that is Abbotsfield Park. Frenchwood Grade 3s in their first senior carnival were magnificent, participating with great vigour and enthusiasm running fast, jumping high and throwing far. The Grade 4 footy factory entered the arena next and left nothing on the track, names like Modrijian, Beams, Martin, Ball, Perry and Barwick always in the thick of the action vying for a coveted place amongst the elite of 2020. The Grade 5s then joined the fervour, a small but intimidating group with a steely resolve. They have been moulded into fierce but respectful competitors by the effervescent Mrs Taylor and the always loud and vocal Mr Rickwood. Finally, after assisting with proceedings for most of the day the Grade 6s entered the stadium ready to make the most of their swan song as students of HRCS. There were highlights aplenty, none more satisfying than watching 6PJ’s very own Jett Stalker thunder down the 100m track nearly getting home, only to be beaten by the consummate professional in Ben Barwick who completed a clean sweep of track events! He was matched however by the ferocity and sheer will to win of Brianna Burdon who also managed a clean sweep of the track. Once all was said and done the Yellow might that is the Young Falcons took out the House Cup Athletics Carnival 300+ points.  Well done Young! A massive thanks to Miss Wise who hobbled in and performed exceptionally as chief recorder, Mr Luttrell who took Long Jump officiating to the next level and Mr Terry Jones for offering to help as starter.

Interschools Athletics Carnival

On a cool and calm Friday morning the elite of HRCS’ athletics program ventured to the Domain Athletic Centre to compete against the best southern Tasmania Catholic Schools  had to offer. Under the expert guidance of Mrs French and Mrs Taylor the team arrived ready for action. From the outset it was clear HRCS were here to compete. The maroon and blue machine clicked into gear, a flurry of ribbons in all grades and everyone trying their absolute best representing HRCS. Some highlights included Mahnoor Tariq pulling away from the pack in the final 20 to clinch the Grade 6 Div 2 girls title, Cooper Johnson flicking the fringe from his brow as he took the checkered flag and Alex Clarkson the ‘super-sub’ in Grade 4 taking over and collecting ribbons at will! In a real highlight the Grade 6 boys went back to back in the 4x100m relay dominating from start to finish, the Grade 6 girls in their 4x100m were also impressive, leading all the way only to be pipped on the line by what appeared to be Melinda Gainsford dressed in a St Mary’s uniform. A big congratulations needs to go to the STCPSSA who managed to get this event up and running in a very short amount of time after some restrictions were lifted. I’d like to personally thank the ever reliable Mrs Renee Ludwig and the exceptional Mr Damian Riza who both arrived with the sparrows to help set up the entire event and helped throughout the day. Without you two it would not have been possible!
