Grade Six has had a great start to Term Two. Starting back in the hall on our 'class holiday', students have shown great resilience, flexibility and positivity to make the space functional and conducive for learning. To make our time in the hall fun, students helped design a classroom 'airport' theme with airport posters, passports and boarding passes printed for students to keep upon our 'return trip' to Grade Six. We can see our classroom is almost ready to move into and we are looking forward to being back in there.
At the start of the year Grade Six students enjoyed their first term as leaders of the school, showing admirable qualities that saw all students receive their Aussie Sports Leader hat by the end of the term. This leadership was also on hand at our swimming carnival where all students showed resilience, encouragement and teamwork when assisting teachers and younger students in their races and around the pool.
Term 1 also saw us explore Federation in HASS, Holy Week in Religion, and the continuation of our Maths Acceleration program which kept students incredibly busy all term! We managed to get our reading group and spelling group programs up and running too as students look to build on their reading and literacy skills.
In Holy Week, Grade 5 and 6 had the opportunity to produce a re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross. All students involved performed their role exceptionally well and with humbling conviction.
At the end of Term students also had an excursion to Shag Bay where we spoke about connection to country and the importance of acknowledgement of country. This was followed by some fun at Simmons Park Lindisfarne.
In Term Two we are excited to continue with our literacy rotations, focussing more specifically on our writing skills. We are starting to investigate Natural Disasters in Science which will see some exciting learning activities coming students' way! We have also started the Term with an MJR session on empathy and kindness. This included some hands-on activities, discussion and content on how students can put themselves in other people's shoes to help understand how we can be kind, patient and supportive of others.
In other news, we welcome Jethro Cassidy who will be conducting his first pre-service teaching placement with us from Monday 8th May - 26th May. He is very much excited for the chance to see the co-teaching model in action and run some lessons with the students!
We have also had a great time with our class dog Herbie. Herbie has been a great calming presence, encouraging students to take on extra responsibility and to help us engage with younger students when on playground walks.
We have attached some photos below of all our Term One experiences below.
