Dear Parents/Guardians
Over the past weeks we have been required to introduce and completely adapt to a new way of educating our students. The commitment of the staff has been outstanding, their ability to change, learn and implement the Learning@Home Program in such a short amount of time has been beyond anything I could have imagined. Our parent survey results which are included with the newsletter certainly demonstrated the level of satisfaction that the community had with our process, planning and communication. The feedback provided will assist with any future planning. The Platforms we already had in place and the fact that we had one to one devices from Grade 2 made a significant difference to our ability to transition to Learning@Home.
Our focus now needs to be on the social and emotional wellbeing of our students as they adapt to their return to school. Many of our students had not seen friends or had the opportunity to play with peers for nearly 10 weeks. We have had to refocus our attention on our three expectations of respect, safety and learning. Some children are anxious and we are working hard to support these children through the processes we have in place.
Our routines with pick up and drop off have continued to improve daily and parents are respecting our need to ensure the safety of the children first. We have 4 to 5 staff on daily from 8.15 to 8.50 and the same for 30 minutes in the afternoon. Staff have reported that the students are entering the classroom very calm and ready to start the day and that teachers can focus on the students and settle them for the routines of the day.
As we adapt to our new normal I would like to sincerely thank all in our community for their support, understanding and patience with our changed routines.
Bernadette Brooks
Principal
On Monday 25th May as we welcomed our students back to school we took the opportunity as a Leadership Team to thank all our staff for the many changes they have adapted to over the past weeks and their continual support of our school community. Each staff member was presented with a plant as a symbol of our appreciation for the growth and change we have all adapted to so quickly. We would particularly like to acknowledge Adam Faulks, the General Manager from Tibballs Nursery, for his assistance in the provision of this special gift to recognise our staff.
Grade 6 would like to share some work they have done this week for Reconciliation Week. We first began Reconciliation Week viewing and discussing the Sorry speech made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008 for the Stolen Generation of Indigenous children who were removed from their families. After this we began creating our own sorry speeches as if we were the Prime Minister addressing all of Australia about the indigenous people and the stolen generation. In our speech we had to include this year's theme “In this together”. Some Grade 6 students would like to share theirs with you. (Brianna)

I am truly and deeply sorry. Australia is very sorry and disappointed in their actions in the past. We are all in this together and will not disappoint you anymore. We realise that taking your children was the worst decision ever made by the Government of Australia. To the mothers and fathers we can not bring back your children but we hope we can gain back your trust. Once again we say sorry for the families we broke up and we say sorry for the stolen generation. Sincerely, the Parliament, and the commonwealth of Australia.
Jaxon
Dear Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander people,
We are truly sorry for taking your children away and now we are all in this together. It was the absolute worst decision the Australian Government ever made. Now we shall try to work together and there will be no more children taken from their families. We will let the aboriginals live in their own way and no more judgement towards Aboriginals or Torres Strait Islanders.
Leila
We are sorry. Sorry for all of the misery and grief we caused you. Sorry for making it legal to take away your family. Sorry for destroying the lives of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We are very sorry for the harm we caused your offspring. We apologise a million times and more for taking away your land that you were peacefully living on. We should not have come over and stolen your young. We are not going to let this happen again. We are all in this together now. We are going to restore the friendship between us. To all Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander people we are deeply sorry.
Sincerely,
The Parliament of Australia
Thank you to our parents who completed our survey in relation to learning@home. The feedback has been very affirming and greatly appreciated but has also provided us with opportunities to reflect and improve any practices that we may be able to in this space.
Morning and Afternoon Routine Pick Ups
We are very grateful to all our parents for following the new guidelines that we are operating under at present.
Morning Routine:
Staff will be on duty from 8.20 to 8.50 to assist with Kiss and Drop and Gate Drop Off
- Kiss and Drop - Please ensure that you do not leave the car in this area and that children exit cars quickly and safely.
- Gate - Please ensure that you socially distance yourself from other adults and wait for the teacher on duty to assist your child if they are in a younger grade level and need help separating.
Afternoon Routine:
Staff will be on duty from 2.40 until 3.10 and then students will be supervised in the office area if not picked up during this time.
- Kiss and Drop - Please ensure that you do not leave the car in this area and that children enter cars quickly and safely. Please don't worry if you choose to leave Kiss and Drop pick up for a few minutes past 3.00 we will wait with your child and this will assist with traffic flow.
- If you are able to collect students without siblings in Kindergarten and Prep by 2.40 from the EYC this would be helpful in reducing the amount of traffic. Please exit the school grounds through the top gate.
- Students without siblings in Grade 1 will be brought to the gate at 2.40 pm and parents are asked to pick up at this time from the gate, we will wait with your child and supervise until you arrive.
- Students in Grade 1 with siblings, and in Grade 2 and 3 will be walked to the gate and will remain on the grass area at 2.50. Students will then be assisted by a teacher and the crossing guard to cross the road to parents who will need to wait on the grass area in front of the car park for the shops.
- Students in Grade 4,5 and 6 without siblings will be leaving the school grounds through the church gate at 2.50. Students in Grade 4,5 and 6 with siblings will be asked to wait on the grass area inside the gate near the crossing and siblings will be brought from the classrooms to this area. We will bring the children to their siblings in this area, there is no need for students to pick up from the classroom.
- Parents are asked to follow social distance expectations while waiting, it may take some extra minutes to get your child to you but please be assured they will be safe and looked after and we do ask for patience as we escort students through the gate.
- Students attending After School Care or catching the bus will follow the same routines as in Term 1.
Please be assured that staff will remain on duty until all children are collected by a parent either at Kiss and Drop or at the gate. If you wish to delay your pick up until after 2.50 your child will be supervised and safely remain with a staff member inside the gate. Thank you for your patience and support as we all adjust to these new routines and for respecting our staff on duty.

Extension of Fare Amnesty to Sunday July 5 2020
Dear Operator
Extension of fare amnesty to Sunday 5 July 2020
I can now advise that the fare amnesty period for both general access and fare charging school bus services has been extended to Sunday, 5 July 2020. This means that no contracted bus operator should charge any fares until Monday, 6 July 2020.
The fare amnesty is being extended to provide extra time for passengers to access a smartcard and non-cash credit top up arrangements (where available), or other options for cashless payment.
Advice to families is that students without a smartcard should apply for one from their bus operator (where available) as soon as possible during the fare amnesty.
Students who travel on a school bus that does not have a cashless ticketing option should be encouraged to purchase a ten-trip ticket to minimise the frequency of cash handling on the bus when the fare amnesty has ended. Where possible, parents/carers are encouraged to purchase ten-trip tickets from the operator’s sales office or depot location to further minimise cash handling on the bus.
The Department of State Growth has advised families (through the Department of Education) to contact their operator for information on cashless options available on their services – so please be prepared to respond to any enquiries and where possible, make information available on your website.
The Passenger Transport Branch has already provided you with advice about what the fare amnesty means for your monthly reporting arrangements and payments. If you are unsure, please contact the Passenger Transport Branch for more information.
As on-site learning resumes for all students, passenger numbers on bus services will increase. If you have concerns about overcrowding on your bus service, please contact the Passenger Transport Branch by email ptscontracts@stategrowth.tas.gov.au or call (03) 6166 3343 with the information. A team has been established to investigate issues and respond quickly.
Further announcements may affect ongoing service requirements and the department will continue to update you as information becomes available. New information on school bus arrangements and the fare amnesty can be found on the website at: www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au/families-community/public-transport
Thank you for your ongoing patience and support as we navigate this together.
Regards
Babette
