Muwinina Mob mid-year report:
It's been an exciting first half of the year for the Muwinina Mob here at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Our welcome back BBQ at our new Yarning Circle next to the creek was a lovely afternoon thoroughly enjoyed by all attended. With Miss West and Mrs Huxley cooking up a storm the wallaby sausages were a huge hit!
Come May we were very blessed to have Linton and Cade Burgess join us for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony to begin our Cross Country day. Their performance amongst the Wattle trees and gums was awesome!
Throughout the term our Aboriginal students gathered at various times to get back on country and learn about culture. In Term 2 we had a focus on symbols and Aboriginal art, with a bit of basic Palawa Kani thrown in too!
During Term 2 Grade 4 students completed the Muwinina Walk. An annual bushwalk that takes us through Muwinina Country at the base of Kunanyi/Mt Wellington. We learned about the Muwinina People, the original custodians of the lands around Nipaluna/Hobart and what the impact of colonization had on the lands and its people.
We were extremely lucky to have Djuker Hart join us this year. Djuker is a very well known Aboriginal Knowledge sharer with a strong background in aboriginal food and traditional bush tucker. He took us on a gastronomic journey through the bush and explained how it fed the muwinina for a millenia. He then produced a smorgasbord of traditional Aboriginal fare for us to feast on at the end of the walk. The salt bush chips and wallaby burgers were exceptional! Thanks Djuker!
If you've been wandering the hallowed grounds of HRCS you may have noticed a fresh face in the PE Dept. Joining us this year as our AFL Sports Ready Trainee is Miss Kayedel Smith. Kayedel is a state level athlete and has done some incredible things on the national stage representing Lutriwita/Tasmania in the 100m and 200m. If not for Gout Gout she would've been the headline act at the Stawell gift. She has also had a big impact on our school since arriving. She has already become an inflation master with the electronic pump, is an expert at marking the ground with a chalk stick and has become a solid contributor in regards to staff room banter. She also goes for the hawks (picture proof). Welcome to HRCS Kayedel!
HPE Term 2
Well, what a massive term we've had in HPE! Term 2, as has been the tradition is our Cross Country Term. In PE we have a strong focus on all aspects of running, preparing our students for the Cross Country Carnival/s. In 2025 our participation was tremendous, every student who took to the line finished their race and had a genuine go! We were very proud of our students on Cross Country Carnival day. This lead to some students being selected for the Inter - Primary team that competed at Bayview High on June the 5th and the All Schools Cross Country on the 17th of June. There were great results across the carnivals, none better than Claremont's pocket rocket Joel Cox who finished 13th out of 260 students in the All schools Cross Country! I'd like to congratulate all of our runners who ventured north and pushed through the mud and wind to compete. I'd like to thank Miss Kayedel Smith who escorted students far and wide on both days and Mr James Bourke who provided us with coffee and mild comic relief.
Term 3 brings us our Gymnastics program, the Dance production and hopefully a Hawthorn premiership!
Have a great holiday!
Mr Johnson
