Principals Report

Last Friday we celebrated Grandparents and Special Persons Day. We were overwhelmed by the number of important people in our students lives who were able to join us for this special occasion. I have included below my address that I gave during our Liturgy on the importance of Grandparents and Special people in our lives.

“Welcome to our Grandparents and Special Friends Liturgy celebration and morning. Welcome to Father Suresh our Parish Priest.

I am Bernadette Brooks Principal of Holy Rosary, and I want to tell you that we look forward to your presence each year. We are so pleased that you are here with us, that you will spend the morning with us, but even better than our pleasure is that you are getting a sense of where your Grandchildren and special friends spend their school days. Our hope is that today you will get a small sense of what a very special place this is with such incredibly special students, staff and an amazing community.

As I reflected on what I would speak to you about today, I thought very much about the relationship my son Sam had with his grandmother. Due to circumstances I was a single parent for the first years of Sam’s life. The relationship that he had with his grandmother until her sudden death when he was 7, is one that has had a profound impact on him and one that has guided him through his life and choices. In those years she was our support network, strength and provider of unconditional love. She gave him 7 years of moments that have turned into a lifetime of memories. You all do this daily and give your grandchildren special memories and you will see this in our video presentation very clearly.

As Grandparents and special people you are the ones with amazing life experiences, you have a world of knowledge and wisdom to share. You are there to talk to when parents won’t listen, pick-ups and drop offs, sleep overs, treats and chocolates, special shopping trips, celebrating small victories when others haven’t got time.

What children need most are the essentials that you provide in abundance; unconditional love, kindness, patience, humor, comfort, and lessons in life.

We thank you for sharing our morning with us today and for the important role you play in our beautiful student’s lives.

Today we also would like to thank especially Mrs. Claire Williams and our Choir, Mrs. Lauren McCallum, Mrs. Gemma Bennett, Mr. Scott MacKenlay, Mrs. Allison Rumbold and Mrs. Kylie McIntyre, the parents who are assisting with the coffee stations and the wonderful staff of Holy Rosary Catholic School for the incredible amount of work that went into today.

The most important thing is your presence in our school and we thank you again for sharing this special day with us.”

Bernadette Brooks
Principal

Prayer and Reflection

There’s a special kind of love that grandchildren have for their grandparents. It’s filled with respect for their wisdom and accomplishments.

With gratitude for the values they’ve given us…
with delight in the stories of our family that they remember and share.

It’s a special kind of love that’s built on a lifetime of caring and giving.
It’s the kind of love that’s felt for you my dear grandparent, today and always.

Grandparents bestow upon their grandchildren
the strength and wisdom that time and experience have given them.

Grandchildren bless their grandparents with a youthful vitality and innocence that help them stay young at heart forever.

Together they create a chain of love linking the past with the future.
The chain may lengthen, but it will never part…

“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.”

NAPLAN Online

Trial of the new Online Assessment Platform

You may have heard that NAPLAN online is being introduced across Australia over three years from 2017. Tasmanian Government and Catholic schools will be administering NAPLAN online from 2019. NAPLAN online will provide better assessment, more precise results and a faster turnaround of information.

Our school has opted to trial the new assessment platform (the computer system the test will be taken on) and assess our readiness to participate in NAPLAN Online from 2019. This trial is called the School Readiness Test (SRT).

The SRT is not a test of student achievement and results will not form part of a student’s overall assessment. Participating in this trial is important as it will help us ensure we have adequate internet connectivity, and whether students have access to a sufficient number of devices for NAPLAN testing. During the trial, our school will have the opportunity to practice managing the classroom logistics for an online assessment and the new test administration processes. Feedback from schools participating in this trial will inform transition to the online assessment as well as provide valuable feedback to shape the final development of the NAPLAN online platform. The SRT has not been constructed to assess curriculum knowledge, but rather to provide students with an opportunity to experience the types of questions that will be included in the new online assessment.

During this week 2017, students in Years 4 will participate in a trial of the assessment platform, by undertaking two online tests that include examples of the new NAPLAN online questions. Each test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. Our school will be taking part in this trial during the week of September 11th-15th.

Participation in this trial is a key step to ensuring a successful NAPLAN online experience. If you have further questions, please contact Mrs. McCallum or Ms. Reeve at the school.

Farewell to Mrs Kristy Clark

Last week we said farewell to Mrs. Kristy Clark. I know you will all join with me in thanking Kristy for the contribution she has made to each and every individual child’s learning in Kindergarten. Kristy is an incredibly gifted teacher and her enthusiasm and dedication are a testament to her passion for ensuring the best learning and discovery experiences for all students in her care. We wish her well in new role at St Brigid’s Catholic School.

We are extremely pleased to welcome Mrs. Andrea Quick to the Kindergarten C team for the remainder of the school year.

Father’s Day Stall

Thank you to Mrs. Maynard and her helpers for organizing and coordinating our Father’s day Stall. It is such a special opportunity for our students to be able to purchase gifts for loved ones. The wide selection of gifts is a testament to the time and energy that Mrs. Maynard puts into the Stall.

Choosing that special gift is so much fun

BOB Night

On Tuesday, 9th of September, we held our Blokes on Board evening for our students in Kindergarten to Grade 2. Students and their special person participated in a range of activities focused on Social and Emotional Learning. Together they created a book of positive memories, looked at the Zones of Regulation, created different emotions using a range of materials, played an M&M's feeling game and shared a meal together. Thank you to everyone who joined us and our staff for their preparation for the evening.

We love to spend time with the “Blokes” in our lives
