Principals Report

It seems hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our Second Term and have a two week break to recharge our energies ready for the Third Term. It certainly has been a very busy and productive term and we have so many reasons to celebrate our achievements during the Term. In addition to these achievements we continue to focus on the core business of teaching and learning and providing our students with the very best educational opportunities.

This week we farewell and thank Mrs. Louise Volkmann for her work as our Music Teacher over the past months. Mrs. Volkmann has provided the students with so many wonderful musical opportunities. We welcome back Mrs. Claire Williams from Maternity leave. Mrs. Theresa Stephenson will also be leaving us and we wish her well and thank her for all her work with our Grade 1 students.

During this week we take time to celebrate NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee and its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s. NAIDOC Week seeks to increase awareness in the wider community and our schools of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. It is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognize the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields.

This year’s NAIDOC week theme “Our Languages Matter” aims to emphasize and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song. Language is vitally important as it is not only a means of communication, but expresses knowledge about all aspects of culture.

We thank all members of our community for their ongoing support of Holy Rosary Catholic School and look forward to our third term which will commence on Monday 24th July.

Principal

Prayer and Reflection

NAIDOC Week

This week is a special week because it is NAIDOC week. The theme for NAIDOC week for 2017 is “Our Language Matters”. Students across all grades have been learning and reflecting on NAIDOC week to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

Last Wednesday, some students from Holy Rosary were involved in a special workshop held by Trish Hodge and Dwayne Everette-Smith. The students participated in a workshop which involved learning weaving, singing, language and the importance of NAIDOC week.

PJ Day

On Friday students from Holy Rosary Catholic School participated in the Give Me 5 For Kids fundraiser. We were joined by Dave and Al from Triple M to witness an amazing gesture made by Molly, one of our Grade 4 students. Molly has been raising funds for Give Me 5 For Kids by cutting off her beautiful long locks to donate as a wig for children who are receiving treatment for cancer. Molly is truly amazing and an inspiration to us all at Holy Rosary. Thanks to the generosity of our families we were able to make a donation of $500 from our school to the Give Me 5 For Kids fundraiser.

Kinder P will be having their PJ Day for the Give Me 5 For Kids fundraiser on Thursday 6th July followed by Grades 5 and 6 on Friday 7th July.

Netball and Football Round Robin

What a great day of football!

32 of our Grade 5 and 6 boys and girls took part in Dominic's Football Round Robin on Friday. Our boys and girls represented our school wonderfully well, both on and off the field; playing the games in great spirit and getting through all four games undefeated. We were even able to enjoy a sausage in bread whilst waiting for the bus, to cap off a fantastic day.

A big thanks to the students for doing such a great job, your school and parents are very proud of you.

Mr Brad Hastie

On Friday, a mixture of Holy Rosary Grade Five and Six students took part in the Catholic Schools Netball Round Robin at Creek Road. Holy Rosary was represented by four teams who displayed enthusiasm, respect and great sportsmanship throughout the day. Holy Rosary can be proud of the manner in which all our students conducted themselves on and off the court and a highlight for me was witnessing the joy that all players, of all skill levels, got from participating. A huge thank you goes out to Cerise Freeman and Amanda Walker for volunteering their time to coach two of our netball teams on the day. Thanks also goes out to Ben Johnson, Liz Mason, Brad Hastie, Will Atkin and Renee Ludwig for their support during these sporting events.

The last four weeks has seen our students involved in our annual Gymnastics Program. This year, thanks to the Sporting Schools Program, the HPE Department was able to expand the program from two 45 minute sessions to two 90 minute sessions. This program does not occur without the great support of our administration staff and I would like to publicly thank them for all their help this term with the program.

I would also like to thank the Hobart Gymnastics Academy for accommodating us and providing a great venue. Finally, a big thanks to our wonderful staff and parent volunteers who make this a truly great experience for all of our students.

HRCS Movie Night

Our Movie Night on Saturday evening was a wonderful community event and we certainly had an impressive turn out to watch the movie “Sing” and enjoy a wide selection of movie snacks from sausages, toasties, choc tops, popcorn and sipahh straws. All money raised from food sales will go towards our Grade 6 Canberra trip and money from ticket sales towards our school fundraising efforts.

Congratulations to Freya who won the lucky number draw and 10 Kilograms of Cadbury chocolate. Proceeds from the lucky number paid for the use of the screen. Thank you to Michelle Crennan for organizing the lucky number draw.

Thank you to all who assisted on the evening. It certainly was a team effort with parents from Grade 6 and parents from other grades and staff working together to make it such a fantastic night.

ANNOUNCING OUR WEBSITE - Watch this space

From Term 3 we are happy to announce that Holy Rosary Catholic School will have a new website. It is supported by the Schoolzine platform and therefore will have many interactive and multi-functional capabilities.

One of the wonderful functions will be a parent calendar where parents can access their grade information, as well as other school events. Future capabilities will enable excursions forms to be digitally signed.

It is a portal of information about our school, with the ability to download and print off forms, report absences, and newsletters also accessible from the website. This is a wonderful collaborative platform for existing and prospective parents with more information available Term 3.

A very big thank you to Mrs Jacki Jones who has devoted numerous hours to the development of our website.
