Principals Report

As a parent, a teacher and now principal, the below quote and image are ones that I know some of us struggle to accept at times. From my perspective, however, this is the way things must work in schools in 2017. As a Catholic school it is our responsibility to encourage and ensure that each student receives exactly what it is they need to be successful. This may mean some students are treated differently at times, but if this is what is necessary for them to be successful we must not apologise for this. We all want our children to develop into resilient and happy young people. I am hoping as a way of helping this, we can all challenge ourselves to have positive conversations with our children when we first see them after school.

A way of helping our children see the positive side of their relationships and learning at school, and to help them develop into resilient members of our community in our changing and challenging world is to ask them:-

  • What were the best 3 things that happened at school today?
  • If I rang your teacher up tonight what would he/she say about your day?
  • How did you help somebody today?
  • Tell me one thing you learned today?
  • What was your favourite part of lunch?

Focusing on the positive aspects of school is a certain way to ensure your child continues to foster positive relationships and develop a love of learning.

This week we welcome back Mrs. Sue Reardon from leave. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Sharon Goldsworthy and Mrs. Jacki Jones for taking on additional days and roles while Mrs. Reardon was on leave. Thank you also to Mrs. Wendy Werner who picked up extra duties and days to ensure that our Office continued to run smoothly. I know that we all think it but probably don’t say it enough but on behalf of us all thank you so much to our amazing Office Staff. It is not until you spend time in the Office that you realize what an incredible job these ladies do as the face of our community. Their care, welcome and compassion to our students and parents is an absolute testament to them and we are so incredibly lucky to have you all.

Congratulations to Mrs. Megan Richardson who will be remaining at St John’s Catholic School for the remainder of the year as Acting Principal. Congratulations and thank you also to Mrs Lauren McCallum and Mrs Gemma Bennett who have agreed to stay in their roles as Assistant Principals for the remainder of the year. There will be some small changes to staffing as a result of these appointments and we will confirm these in the coming weeks.

I will be away in Devonport until Friday evening at the Catholic Council of Educational Leaders meeting with all Catholic principals in Tasmania. I can be contacted by email if needed at any time or please see a member of the leadership team.

Prayer and Reflection

The word 'communion' means to be united with; Catholics believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus Christ. At his last supper, Jesus said of the bread that he shared among his followers, "Take and eat, this is my body." When we receive Holy Communion, Catholics believe that in a mysterious way we are sharing in the body and blood of Christ. Holy Communion and the whole celebration is also known as Eucharist, from a Greek word meaning thanksgiving.

On Sunday 18th June five students from Holy Rosary Catholic School made their First Holy Communion. Congratulations to James, Emersen, Matilda, Ciara and Tyler. We also congratulate their families who have supported and guided their children through this preparation. We thank the Parish of Claremont for the continued support of the students at Holy Rosary Catholic School especially with their preparation for the Sacraments. Special thanks to Father Suresh and Mrs. Jenny Ploughman for preparing the Candidates with their Sacramental Preparation and Mrs. Libby Piesse for her support of the Sacramental Program.

Each year Social Media sites becomes more popular with Primary School students. At this stage in our school this site is SNAP CHAT. Social Media sites such as SNAP CHAT are for students 13 years or older- which means that Primary school aged children should not be accessing SNAP CHAT. In recent weeks we have begun to have some issues with SNAP CHAT. These issues are occurring out of school which makes it difficult for us as a school to follow up. While we can work at school through our Cyber Safety programs to educate students, we also need parents to monitor closely, appropriate internet at home. If you are supervising children using the internet, you can help them stay safe online by reminding them of the following simple steps:-

  • never share passwords, no matter how much they trust their friends.
  • use strong passwords with a combination of letters and numbers, not something that is easy to guess, like a pet’s name or a favourite singer.
  • don’t publish their personal details or those of their friends, such as names, ages, school details, email addresses or phone numbers on social networking sites (including profiles).
  • don’t publish inappropriate photos of themselves or anyone else and ask permission before writing about other people or publishing their photo.
  • don’t reply to nasty email messages (but keep a copy of them in case they’re needed if trouble arises).
  • block senders of inappropriate or unpleasant messages or delete the person if they are in their contact list.
  • don’t give out their mobile number to people they don’t know or trust.
  • save all nasty messages on their email accounts or mobile phones as evidence and show an adult.
  • Contact the relevant telecommunications company to block problem numbers on your mobile service.
