Principals Report

In the past fortnight we have celebrated a number of events where our community has come together as one; the Girls Night Out, the Mother’s Day Stall, Walk Safely to School Day and our Cross Country day to name just a few. It is on these occasions we see the power of working together as a community for our students and the impact this can have on all.

Our Kindergarten 2018 enrolment interview process is well under way and positions will be offered this week. It truly is a privilege to meet with existing families and those wanting to join our community to share the story of our community. The first question asked at interview is, ‘Why have you chosen Holy Rosary Catholic School for your child? And why have you chosen a Catholic School?’ I would love for existing families to hear the responses to these questions. It is extremely heart lifting to be a part of this conversation.

Our community, staff, students and parents are held in high regard by the wider community. Every new parent has a story about knowing or meeting a Holy Rosary family. Their stories reflect the shared goals and beliefs of our community. The most common themes include:

  • They know a family who cannot speak highly enough of their experience at Holy Rosary
  • They are friends with a Holy Rosary family and cannot wait to share in this experience and become a part of this community
  • They want nothing but the best for their child and the reputation of our school speaks for itself
  • They have seen how our students conduct themselves within the wider community and share these same values
  • The Catholic experience of Holy Rosary is authentic to their faith
  • They have done their research and can clearly see that the learning process that we have in place.

It is appropriate for us all to be mindful of how fortunate we are to enjoy such a vibrant, engaging and supportive learning environment.

Reflection

By tradition the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. In May it is the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devotion became especially popular among the members of the Jesuit Order in the late 18th Century and quickly spread throughout the Western Church. May crownings and other special May events in honour of Mary, such as public recitation of the Rosary, stem from this time. Events include:

Our Lady of Fatima: Monday 13 May, Our Lady Help of Christians: Friday 24 May Blessed Virgin Mary: Saturday 25 May, The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Friday 31 May.

Holy Rosary Catholic School was so called because Father Nowlan felt he owed the arrival of the Dominican Sisters to the intercession of Our Lady Queen of the Rosary. A special novena was arranged in the Parish to pray that the Claremont Parish would get an order of sisters to come to Claremont. What a fitting name for our school.

Knowing the ‘Hail Mary’ and praying it together as a school community is helping us pray the Rosary in Staff Prayer and in our classrooms and assembly. Each month on a Thursday students from Grade 3 to 6 join with our Parish Community to pray the Rosary. Parents and families are most welcome to join us at these times.

Parish News

It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of Fr Dudley Perera on 3rd May in Sri Lanka. Fr Dudley was the Parish Priest of Claremont for a number of years and was greatly admired and respected by many families, staff and students of Holy Rosary Catholic School.

Father Dudley was 82 years of age and his funeral took place on 5th May.

Please pray for the repose of his Soul.

RIP.

Walk Safely to School Day

On Friday we participated in Walk Safely to School Day. Students, families and staff gathered at the Girl Guides Hall on the Claremont Village Green at 8.00 am to begin walking to Holy Rosary Catholic School. It was certainly an appropriate warm up for the Cross Country also held on this day.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues, and diabetes, it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Thank you to Mrs. Parker, Mrs. King, Mrs. George and Miss Middleton for coordinating this community event.

Cross Country

On Friday Kindergarten to Grade 6 students participated in the HRCS Cross Country Carnival. It was an outstanding day filled with different activities, sportsmanship behaviour and House Spirit. The addition of the Dodge Ball games and Zorb Balls for students in Grade 1 to 6 certainly added to the spirit of the day. A highlight was our Grade 6’s running their final Cross Country to the cheers of the whole school who lined up at the finish and start lines.

Such a fantastic day does not work so seamlessly without the support of our dedicated staff. In particular, we would like to thank Mr. Ben Johnson and Mr. Will Atkin for the organization and preparation of the day, and Mr. Scott Mackenlay and Mr. George Simonetis for setting up and packing up.

Congratulations to Doyle the winning house on the day by only a short margin.

Thank you to all the families who supported the Stall. It was absolutely fantastic for our students to have the opportunity to shop for those special people in their lives and an added bonus was that the Stall raised over $1000.00 for our school community fundraising.
